My Review: e.l.f. High Definition Powder

Hey guys! I'm not that big into powder foundation, as I noticed that the powder particles typically are pretty noticeable as they settle into fine lines and clash with baby hairs that begin near the forehead. So I found this powder on eyeslipsface.com for $6 and immediately was attracted, as it doesn't offer coverage by containing skin toned particles, but rather provides concealing by making imperfections blurry and forcing it to become difficult to spot a blemish.

What is It? This translucent powder retails for $6 and is considered a rivaling dupe for the Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, which sells for $30. Containing a silky smooth texture and boasting a soft-focused glow on the skin, it claims to make skin radiant, masking fine lines and imperfections. This incredibly soft and invisible powder states that it functions perfectly for everyday wear and performs beautifully on high definition camera technology.

Things to Rave About:

1) Hides Imperfections Without Adding Any Color / Weight: Since it is a translucent / invisible powder, there is absolutely no color or coverage. Instead, the invisible powder coats the skin with microfine particles, leaving a blurry finish that makes your face appear exactly how it would in dim, soft focused light, where everyone's skin looks flawless and even. The tiny, tiny particles soak up any oil, just as a sponge would do to water, thus skin is left oil free and matte.

2) Silky Smooth: Containg a high dosage of silica, the powder leaves skin feeling silky smooth. There is a touch of slickness, almost slipperiness in the powder, which makes a fantastic face primer. When using the powder as a primer, foundation effortlessly glides over a smooth and even canvas.

Things to Rant About:

 1) Packaging: While the product inside is flawless in nearly every way and ranks among the top powders on the market, the packaging is both bulky and very messy. When you open the lid of the jar, there is a peel inside that reveals a sifter with about 50 tiny holes. Since the powder is so microfine and finely milled, it easily travels through the holes, permitting the powder to escape and be wasted. My advice: do not discard the peel but rather leave it on and take a toothpick to punch about 5 holes, breaking through the peel and exposing just a few holes. 50 holes releases way to much powder.

My Overall Rating: 9.5 / 10

  1. Thanks for the review, in UK E.L.F. products are hard to find in stores and I prefer to test products before I buy. I've been looking for a good dupe for MUFE HD powder.
I have a question though about the silica. As this contains silica, how does it hold up against photo camera flash? I know these look great face to face and on video but how about camera flash? Do you still get the ghostface look?

    1. Great question! I have not had an issue with flash photography, but I did find numerous reviews that complained about this powder's tendency to create a ghost face. It appears that the best way to prevent the washed out look is to apply powder extremely sparingly and add color back to your face after application by applying blush, bronzer, etc.

  2. Such a fantastic little review. I've never tried any E.L.F products, but i've always been drawn towards this powder. Your post has definitely made me consider buying it, although its a shame about the packaging. For such a cheap price though, I doubt it would matter.

    Lovely blog, i'm following.

  4. I have got the same powder for a while. As much as I like it, find it a bit tricky to use sometimes. Thanks for the tips for using the peel and poke holes in it. Think it will make life so much easier!

  5. I loveeee this powder, I agree with you about the holes. The packaging is a bit bulky but compared to other loose powders ive tired, the screw top and big opening is a definite plus for me.

  9. Thank you so much. This helped a lot. I own the product myself and I just didn't know what the use of it was for. I agree on the part that makes your skin soft. This powder is also very affordable. i highly recommend you do a comparison to it's dupe.
